What is the RPG Pipeline and how to use it

The RPG Pipeline is a posting board to keep track of upcoming tabletop rpgs. When I see a new rpg released, going into crowdfunding or looking for playtesters, I post it here. I cover only games (not supplements or other add-ons) and only English language.

Carbyne Jungle $19.99

Carbyne Jungle:

Carbyne Jungle
Publisher: Nor Cal Mythos Entertainment

Set thousands of years into a distant future, Carbyne Jungle combines elements of Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Noir, and Horror, into a rich gaming experience. Built on the Tri-Forge Engine, Carbyne Jungle has three styles of gameplay, customizable for beginners through advanced players, so whoever is at the table can jump into the game.  The setting is both in-depth and flexible allowing A GM to dive right into the universe, forge their own world, or anywhere in between. With phenomenal battles, meaningful non-combat conflicts, and an incredibly flexible advancement system, Carbyne Jungle is the game you’ve been waiting for.

NCM took every RPG we loved, tore them down to the bones, and looked at what was a essential for a great gaming experience. We didn’t want to carry an aspect over just because it was traditional, but we also didn’t want to throw out a common game facet just to be different. So we started with a skeleton of what makes a great gaming experience, added some muscle, fashion sense, hardware, topped it off with a half psychotic personality and threw the switch.

We built 3 styles of gameplay into our game engine: Basic, Standard, and Advanced… that can all be played simultaneously IN THE SAME GAME. A player joining their first game ever can use a sample character or use the quick character creation options to make a character in under 10 minutes, and then jump into the game.

Levels are replaced with a fluid system. As your character grows, you don’t have to shoe-horn them into a specific mold. After each session, your character will earn one or more advancement points that can be spent to upgrade your character...however you want. Unstoppable Juggernaut? Go for it. Glass Cannon? Sure. Skill based character? Feel free. You decide what you want your character to be.

This is Carbyne Jungle

One Page Asylum (Halloween Special 2019):

One Page Asylum (Halloween Special 2019)
Publisher: Micro RPG

What once was rain has turned to icy sleet, running down your cheeks, the back of your neck. Your hair is wet and sticks to your skin, chilling you further against the late October night. Your feet feel frozen standing in the cold mud of the woods. You know you need to find shelter quickly or you’ll certainly die of exposure. Unfortunately, your old clunker of a car broke down miles from the nearest town. Your only hope is to find an isolated farmhouse, barn, or some other building to spend the night and wait out the unexpected storm.

Marching through the woods, you make your way forward, the isolated road vanishing behind you through the thick trees. It feels as if you walk for hours. Your fingers go numb. Your feet burn. Your stomach grumbles for something to eat. Then you see it. Stepping out of the trees into a clearing, you are dwarfed by an enormous building. It looks like it was once a hospital of sorts . . . but now it is abandoned.

Gritting your teeth, you head for the door.

Welcome to One Page Asylum, a stand-alone “one-shot” entry in the One Page series of solitaire role-playing games. Perfect for a plane ride, hotel room, or anywhere else. Based on the same system as One Page Dungeon and One Page Cthulhu, this game uses a randomly generated grid map, creating a creepy labyrinth for your lost and intrepid hero to survive.

Praedormitium (Zine Edition) $3.50

Praedormitium (Zine Edition):

Praedormitium (Zine Edition)
Publisher: Drowning Moon Studios

Named for the transition of wakefulness to sleep, Praedormitium is a tabletop roleplaying game inspired by the experience of lucid dreaming. Players portray Hypnopomps, characters born with the natural ability to manipulate the Realms of Dream. Praedormitium uses a deck of tarot cards as the basis of its resolution system, cooperative play, and the unlimited power of the DM and players' imaginations to build a cohesive narrative experience. Anything is possible in dreams, and the game can be as wild or whimsical, as dark or surreal as the players choose to make it. Characters' abilities, and the stories they are able to create with them, are as mutable as the very nature of dreams themselves.

This is a zine version of the game, which provides a basic overview of Praedormitium's core concept, character creation process, and all the rules required to play, in under ten pages. A character sheet is not included with this version, but may be forthcoming.

The Great American Novel $10.00

The Great American Novel:

The Great American Novel
Publisher: Gallant Knight Games

The Great American Novel, A Roleplaying Game is a collaborative storytelling tabletop roleplaying game for 3 to 6 players that uses character-driven game play to create a literary experience for a variety of settings and genres.

The Great American Novel has three specific criteria for every Novel to create an experience resembling some of the best American literature:

  •  Literary
Character-motivated stories that are focused on their interactions and personal journeys in a thoughtful and meaningful way.
  •  Realistic
Honestly depicts the characters, events, and history; use of magic and the supernatural are welcome, as long as these themes are also depicted honestly and realistically.
  •  Americana
Situations and characters that are unique to the U.S., whether currently or historically.
Beyond this, it is entirely up to the table to determine what themes they would like to experience. These can be broadly-stroked ideas like “fall from grace,” or specific experiences like “loss of a family member.” They can also bring up a particular time period or genre “film noir” or “1960s counterculture.” They could be places “Jamestown” or events “The Battle of Bunker Hill.”

The game provides tools to help players determine what themes, time period, and setting they want to explore and also features built-in safety mechanics to address themes they do not want included.

GAN uses a Powered by the Apocalypse approach to dice resolution, as well as featuring metacurrency mechanics and a story structure inspired by literature and featuring classic archetypes for presenting the sort of characters one can find throughout Americana.

Final Lap (free version) $0.00

Final Lap (free version):

Final Lap (free version)
Publisher: Gulix

This is the free version of Final Lap. The full version is available here.

Here we are! Grand Rapid Falls! The last race of an exhausting season of the Tour! The crazy, fast and dangerous races of recent months have been exciting to follow, but this race is the most beautiful, the most prestigious. Whoever wins it will be crowned Tour Champion!

This season, the Champion crushed the competition and won all the events. But her challengers all want to take her place in this final stage!

3.2.1. Let's go! The race is on! But don't forget that these drivers have had some great moments all season long (relive them on our dedicated channel!) and the final victory may not be the goal of all of them! The sidelines of the track, failures and successes, their relationships with other runners will impact their performance.

Will the Champion win the race? What impression will these Pilots leave? Who will we see again on the Tour? Who won't finish the race? All these answers (and more) in our live stream!

Final Lap is a role-playing game for 2 or more players (although it is possible to play it alone). Based on Alex Roberts' game For the Queen, and therefore Descended from the Queen, it takes the form of a deck of cards, which we'll draw as the game progresses. They'll help us create our story.

OKmZ%2By.png

In addition to the deck of cards, we don't need anything but our imagination. A game lasts between 30 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the number of cards we use.

The rules of the game are written on the "Instructions" cards, which are revealed and read at the beginning of the game, and which explain us how to play.

z8FVv5.png
Final Lap explores the world of racing and competition. We play the role of drivers in the last race of the season. The race that will determine the overall winner of the season. The Champion won everything this season and is the favourite. But we are her challengers and have an opportunity to beat her in this final lap.

During the game, we will be narrating live scenes, in the middle of the race as we approach the final lap. But we will also tell flashbacks about our past and what happened in previous races, between races or even before we entered the Tour. We will explore the relationships between Pilots and with the Champion.

OYaIX3.png
Final Lap is available in a light version on the For The Drama platform. You can play online with a version that offers a single ending where the Champion is sure to win.  You can also use the platform to discover the game's questions and quickly try out the game.

The full game includes 9 game settings with different atmospheres:

  • Destruction Derby on tracks of all kinds
  • Plane races in a pulp metropolis
  • Kids on soapbox cars
  • But also wizard races, post-apocalyptic rallies, bicycle races...
  • Find out about the full version here
R1t1h3.png
9 unique Champions are also available in the full game, each with their own card and style. It is also possible to use these Champion cards to quickly define your character.

qlQGnQ.png
Final Lap is available in PDF format, in a Print'N'Play version. The cards are adapted to MTG cards sleeves for comfortable use.

I recommend that you print the Back pages in Black & White, and the Front pages in colour.

Only the full version of the game includes the PDF with the Settings and Champions illustrated and in color. I may also add in the future a PDF with the tuck box for your deck of cards, to print and cut yourself. Additional cards may also come in the future.

Dreams of Dragons $9.99

Dreams of Dragons:

Dreams of Dragons
Publisher: Nordic Weasel Games

Ther came sire Gareth in at the gate with an angry countenaunce and his swerd drawen in his hand and cryed aloude that alle the castel myght here hit sayeng “thou traitour syre Gryngamor delyuer me my dwerf ageyn or by the feith that I owe to the ordre of knyghthode I shal doo the al the harme that I can”

Sir Thomas Malory - Le Morte D'Arthur.

* * * * *

Welcome to Dreams of Dragons - a game of classic fantasy adventure gaming inspired by classic games such as Drakar och Demoner and Runequest.

A game with knights and rogues and cat-people. And much more.

* * * * *

Within this book, you will find everything you need to run a fantasy campaign:

*Detailed character creation in a skill-driven system.

*13 playable character species including centaurs, Svart Alfar and the mysterious Skiftkar.

*A solid, skill-driven system based on a D20 roll-under system. No strange dice or fiddling with results. Roll the die and see if you roll under what it says on your character sheet.

*Character improvement through good roleplaying and by actually playing the game.

Characters improve their skills by using them in the adventure and by taking time and money to train and practice.

No character is ever barred from learning a new skill, based on choices made at character creation. Your knight might fall on hard luck and learn some thieving and the thief might decide she wants to practice her swimming skills.

*Combat can be played at multiple levels, from a very simple fast-moving attack/parry system to a fully detailed battle with many tactical choices.

Simple rules cover things like armor weak points, while optional detail covers everything from range penalties to fighting in the dark.

*Extensive notes on miniatures are included for players who enjoy their use. Instead of your miniature figures simply standing still as they kick each others ankles, you will be pushed back, give way or advance heroically as the battle unfolds.

*A straight-forward magic system where spells are learned as skills and powered through magic points.

Spells can be cast at varying levels, allowing the caster flexibility and versatility in game play.

No more lists of near-identical-yet-different-strength healing and fire spells.

*The creatures section offers an introductory cross section with 37 creatures from fantasy, legend and mythology.

*Tools are provided to actually help you play the game, such as detailed Morale rules, a quick town generator, a system for managing NPC plots, how to handle characters researching a topic or owning land, among others.

*Of course this would not be a Nordic Weasel game without several game options, such as tailoring the magic system, making the combat rules far more gritty or maybe lightening up with some fate points.

* * * * *

While the game can be played in any setting you like, we have included the game world of Erehwesle, a fantastical fairytale land where you will find everything from dragons to earth-worshipping cats to war-torn battle fields…and pirate ducks.

A love-letter to the kitchen-sink fantasy of our youths, it is also a modern, playable setting developed specifically to fit with how fantasy games are really played.

The setting is not just an afterthought either.

We’ve included full notes for character creation, language rules and more.

With Erehwesle, Dreams of Dragons is a true out-of-the-box experience. Simply create characters, pick a place in the world to adventure in and see what happens.

* * * * *

What is this game not?

It’s not a dungeon-murder-hobo game, where faceless and disposable characters get massacred in a killer dungeon.

It’s not a highly narrative story-game driven by meta-currencies and story mechanics.

Neither is it an ultra-lite 1 page game.

We’re not here to shock your grandma, change the world or redefine gaming.

However, if you enjoy quest-driven games where a group of beloved, long-term characters adventure together and overcome challenges in a fun fantasy realm, then I think this game is for you.

If you like your games to have a bit of realism in them to make the magical critters all the more fantastic in contrast, then I think this game is for you.

If you miss the days of "rules medium" games that had some meat on the bones, but which didn't require 500 pages to deliver a good experience, then I think this game is for you.

If your idea of good fantasy is a bit of Tolkien and a bit of David Eddings and a bit of Thomas Malory, then I think this game is for you.

* * * * *

All game rules by Ivan Sorensen, the creator of games such as Five Leagues on the Borderlands, Fast and Dirty and FiveCore.

Game setting created by Daniel Luce.

* * * * *

This is NOT intended as the final version of the rules.

First, there are areas of the rules that are yet to be developed, such as the Resource system for handling characters with networks of contacts, more creatures, plot ideas etc.

Second, as with all Nordic Weasel products, we strive to correct errors, improve explanations and incorporate improvements as they are discovered.

Third, some niceties such as quick reference sheets, more game examples etc. are missing from this version though we will try to add them as quickly as we are able to.

This then is a “workhorse” version. I’ve made every effort to make it as easy to use in play as possible.

The game rules will be updated as improvements happen.

It is my hope that after a period of roughly 4-6 months, we will look into producing a fancier version with original artwork, a new cover and so on.

If this happens, everyone who has purchased the original game will be able to get the “deluxe” or  version at a discount equal to what you paid for the original.

Kitten Witches
Publisher: Angry Hamster Publishing

You are all witch familiars. Well okay, witch familiars in training. Okay, okay! You’re a litter of kittens born to a witch’s familiar...

Kitten Witches is set in a world much like ours, except fairy tale creatures are real. These creatures aren’t ‘evil’ in the sense of being deliberately malicious, but they do prey on mortals for sustenance (dreams are delicious, nightmares even more so!) and occasionally tribute such as coins, teeth, or worship. They especially like to prey on mortal children, who are often disbelieved by the adults in their lives, and whose emotions are so wonderful.

The once-peaceful Mouse Republic has been conquered by the vicious Rat Empire, forcing the citizens into squalor and servitude. Safety is a thing of the past as the new Rat overlords abuse their power and the citizens as they please.
The victims must suffer in silence—there is no justice, and any protest invites further reprisals. A once prosperous land has turned into a nightmare.

But not for you—in Quisling you play the part of an obsequious traitor to your fallen country, and have displayed a remarkable willingness to collaborate with your Rat overlords. This has afforded you some measure of safety and liberty, although you have gained the contempt of your fellow mice in return.

Keep your furry head attached by whatever means necessary, even if it means selling out everything you ever cared about!

Meguey & Vincent's PbtA Eye-Openers $25.00

Meguey & Vincent's PbtA Eye-Openers:

Meguey & Vincent's PbtA Eye-Openers
Publisher: lumpley games

PbtA, "Powered by the Apocalypse," is a genre of tabletop roleplaying games. It was launched by our game Apocalypse World, and it continues to grow.

Like a literary or musical genre, PbtA has a mainstream, a cutting edge, a number of fringes, conservative games and expansive ones, and even a subgenre or three.

This suite of games is about exploring the fringes of the genre, about taking the expansive view of what PbtA can mean. It departs from the expected formula of playbooks, stats, and moves, and guides you into some of the new places that "play to find out" and "roleplaying is a conversation" can go.

It includes 6 small games:

  • Murderous Ghosts, a shared-character party game that shows how you can use moves to get players to buy into horror.
  • The Sundered Land, which shows how tight the relationship between a game's setup - "I'm a doomed pilgrim on a dangerous road," or "we're telling our stories around the night watchfire" - and its moves can be.
  • Mobile Frame Zero: Firbrands, which expands the idea of moves upward and makes each move into a tiny-but-complete game of its own.
  • Midsummer Wood, which highlights the fruitful role that judgment calls can play in "play to find out" games.
  • The True & Preposterous Journey of Half-a-Fool, which builds on The Sundered Land to upend the usual model of the GM as the one who poses questions and situations and the players as the ones who answer them.
  • And Spin the Beetle, which takes just one move and blows it up into a wrong and hilarious icebreaker game about bugs - and incidentally, considered alongside Mobile Frame Zero: Firebrands, offers a powerful observation about player consent.
A frightening image of a murderous ghost, veiled.
A shadowy pilgrim in a dramatic landscape, confronting a shadowy monster.
Three mobile frame pilots, friends, representing enemy factions.
A beautiful woman in the woods, holding a grotesque mask in her hand.
A drawing of goblins and sylphs by a river in a dramatic landscape.
A beetle in a glass bottle.
